Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. BJJ. Jits. The gentle art.
Whatever you call it, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more than just submission grappling and ground game. Yes there’s technique that teaches how to overcome strength. Yes there are locks and holds that teach how to dominate and control your opponent. You’ll find fundamentals of self defence that can be applied to practical, day to day life. There’s also the mental aspect of the sport, aka human chess (ask anyone who trains and they’ll know exactly what you’re talking about [what that means]).
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all that, and so much more.
At Guardians, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a mind set, a lifestyle that grows beyond the gym and permeates the personal and professional aspects of a practitioner’s life. Those who train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can’t help but apply what they learn in class to real-world situations. When you’re forever honing technique, practicing patience and keeping humble, it gradually builds self-confidence and resilience.
The capacity to persevere in the face of difficulty is a formidable trait, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the whetstone by which this trait is sharpened, day in, day out.
At Guardians, our goal is to help bring out the very best in our students through our training programs, so that they can achieve their goals both on and off the mat. We pride ourselves on our strong team culture - there’s a real family environment at Guardians that makes students, young and old, feel safe, comfortable and part of the team. Every individual helps drive the team to succeed, and the energy of the team pushes each student to give it their all.
There are three ingredients to starting on the pathway to a rewarding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu experience at Guardians Jiu Jitsu.
The hardest part is often getting up off the couch and making your way to the studio. Once you’re there in good company, you wonder, what was all the fuss over in the first place?
You need to bring your mind as well as your body. If you’ve checked out mentally then you won’t get the benefits from the class. Not only that, but you won’t be present to help your teammates excel either when drilling and sparring.
The most important aspect of learning a new skill. Don’t give up. Don’t give up if it’s hard, if you’re having a bad day, if you’ve missed a few classes, if you can’t be bothered, or if you’re embarrassed or intimidated. These are all normal, human responses that the mind will cycle through at one time or another. Your mind doesn’t rule you, no matter how hard it tries to convince you otherwise.
Once you decide on giving it a go, all you need to do follow the steps above. Although at times it can be tough, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an incredible, life altering, character building sport. It’s body and brain training on a whole new level, and the rewards that come with the grind are real and game changing. Wherever you are on your journey, we’d love to help you walk the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu path and to welcome you to our Guardians Jiu Jitsu family.
